This is a CNC machined 48mm coffee conical burr with m8 thread, made of SUS440C stainless steel with a hardness between HRC52-59. 48mm tapered burrs with M8 threads are usually suitable for some home and small commercial coffee machines, such as some automatic espresso machine models of brands such as Jura, Saeco, Nivona, Miele, Aeg, etc.
fabrication process
- Blank pretreatment: stainless steel, high-speed steel and other wear-resistant materials are selected as blanks, and the stress is relieved by annealing/tempering first, and then the matrix outline of grinding core (cone/flat knife) is roughed by CNC lathe, and the finishing allowance is reserved.
- Precision machining of tooth pattern: the conical grinding core uses a five-axis CNC machining center to mill spiral tooth pattern, and the flat knife grinding core uses a CNC milling machine to process radial/arc tooth pattern, so as to strictly control the accuracy of tooth pitch and tooth depth.
- Finishing and post-processing: CNC lathes finish the reference structures such as mounting surface and shaft hole, and the hardness of metal grinding core is improved by quenching/nitriding, and then the tooth surface finish is optimized by CNC polishing.
- Precision detection: Check the size, tooth profile and meshing clearance with three-coordinate measuring instrument and tooth profile detector to ensure that it meets the grinding requirements.

CNC-cut burrs, also known as machined burrs, are made from a solid metal blank machined using high-precision tools, typically CNC machines. The cutting process removes material from the blank, forming the burr's sharp edges and teeth. This process produces an extremely precise, sharp, and uniform cutting surface.

The burrs we manufacture are typically made from stainless steel or titanium alloy, allowing them to maintain their sharpness over time. The precision of the cutting process ensures that each tooth is identical, resulting in more consistent performance.

CNC-machined coffee burrs are sharper and more precise than cast burrs. They tend to produce a more uniform grind with fewer fines, resulting in more consistent extraction.
Surface treatment
Surface treatment needs to achieve three major goals: enhance wear resistance, reduce coffee oil adhesion, and prevent rust (metal materials). Common processes are as follows:
- Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating. Wear resistance is 3-5 times greater than untreated stainless steel, and the cutting edge is less susceptible to blunting. The coating has a smooth surface (Ra ≤ 0.2μm), reducing coffee powder residue and grease accumulation. Available colors (e.g., gold for TiN and silver-gray for CrN) offer both aesthetic appeal and a polished finish.
- Electropolishing. A burr-free surface reduces coffee powder buildup. The passivated surface improves the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. It does not affect the dimensional accuracy of the grinding core, making it suitable for precision-fit components.
- Nitriding (for stainless steel). Wear resistance surpasses conventional quenching, and deformation is minimized. The nitride layer adheres tightly to the substrate and resists detachment. The cost is lower than PVD coating, making it suitable for household coffee burr removal.
- Sandblasting (auxiliary treatment). It enhances friction in threaded connections and prevents coffee burrs from loosening during high-speed rotation.
