What is heat treatment of metal?

 

Metal heat treatment is a process method that places metal workpieces in a certain medium for heating, heat preservation and cooling, and controls their performance by changing the surface or internal organizational structure of metal materials.

 

Why do parts need heat treatment?

In CNC machining, even if your part has perfect dimensional accuracy and finish, ‌ metal that has not been heat treated may still fail prematurely due to insufficient properties ‌. Heat treatment is the core process connecting "processing molding" and "performance standards", and its necessity is reflected in three dimensions:
1. A break through the material performance limit, make the parts more "strong" ‌
★The mechanical properties of "rigid and flexible"
‌Surface strengthening ‌: through carburizing, nitriding and other processes, a high hardness layer (such as HV 800-1200) is formed on the surface of the parts, and the internal toughness is maintained to achieve the ideal state of "hard outside and tough inside".
(For example: after carburizing and quenching the gear tooth surface, the wear resistance is increased by 3 times, while the impact resistance is not reduced)
★Eliminate the "invisible killer" -- machining stress
CNC cutting and milling will produce residual stress, resulting in deformation or cracking of parts (especially thin-walled parts and complex structural parts).
Stress relief annealing ‌ : heating at 300-600℃ at low temperature to eliminate more than 95% of the residual stress and ensure long-term dimensional stability.
‌★Fights fatigue and corrosion
‌Fatigue life ‌: surface shot peening + heat treatment can extend the fatigue life of automobile spring by 5-10 times.
‌Corrosion resistance upgrade ‌: stainless steel solution treatment, aluminum alloy anodizing and other processes, so that parts are still reliable in wet, acid and alkali environment.
2. Make up for the natural limitations of CNC machining
‌ ★Solve the "processing sequelae"
‌ insufficient hardness ‌ : the surface of soft materials such as aluminum and copper is easy to scratch after processing, and the hardness can be increased from HB 60 to HB 95 by age hardening (such as 6061-T6).
‌ Size "invisible deformation" ‌ : large structural parts (such as machine guide rails) slowly release stress after processing, and the deformation can be controlled within 0.02mm/m by stress relief annealing.
