What is the surface treatment of metal parts?
The metal surface treatment process is to modify the surface of metal materials by physical, chemical or mechanical methods to improve their performance and appearance. These processes play a key role in improving the corrosion resistance, wear resistance, electrical conductivity and aesthetics of metals, and are widely used in machinery manufacturing, automotive industry, construction engineering, electronic appliances and other fields.
Metal machining parts surface treatment process types
There are many kinds of metal surface treatment processes, mainly divided into chemical surface treatment, electrochemical surface treatment, modern surface treatment and mechanical surface treatment.
1. Chemical surface treatment
The bluing and blackening process rapidly oxidizes the surface of the steel products to form a dense oxide film (mainly Fe₃O₄), which improves the rust resistance of the steel. The oxide film can block the direct contact between oxygen and moisture in the air and the metal matrix, and reduce the occurrence of corrosion. There are two kinds of blackening treatment: alkaline heating blackening and normal temperature blackening, of which alkaline heating blackening is suitable for low carbon steel, such as A3 steel, and can obtain better anti-rust effect; Room temperature blackening process is simple, but the effect of low carbon steel is not as good as alkaline blackening.
Pickling uses an acid solution (such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc.) to remove the oxide and rust on the metal surface, exposing a clean metal matrix and providing good surface conditions for subsequent treatment. The surface activity of the metal after pickling is high, which is conducive to the adhesion of the coating and coating, but attention should be paid to avoid excessive corrosion and environmental protection problems of waste liquid treatment.
Electroless plating is the deposition of a layer of metal or alloy coating on a metal surface by chemical reduction reaction without the application of an external current. Common electroless nickel plating, electroless silver plating, etc., can form a uniform coating on the workpiece with complex shape or blind holes, has good corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity, and is widely used in electronics, electroplating and other fields.
TD treatment and QPQ treatment are used to infiltrate carbon, nitrogen and other elements on the metal surface to form a high hardness compound layer to improve the hardness and wear resistance of the surface. QPQ treatment, that is, quenching-polishing-requench comprehensive treatment, can form a dense composite infiltration layer on the surface, improve corrosion resistance and fatigue strength, often used in high-demand mechanical parts.
2. Electrochemical surface treatment
Electroplating is the process of plating a layer of metal or alloy on a metal surface using the principle of electrolysis to improve its corrosion resistance, hardness and aesthetics. Common electroplating metals are zinc, nickel, chromium and so on. Zinc plating is mainly used for anti-corrosion of steel parts, widely used in construction, automobile and other fields; Nickel plating has good wear resistance and decoration. Chromium plating is divided into decorative chromium plating and hard chromium, the former is used to improve the surface brightness, the latter is used to enhance wear resistance and hardness.
Anodizing is the formation of an oxide film on the surface of a metal as an anode through an electrochemical reaction in an electrolyte solution. The anodizing of aluminum and its alloys is the most widely used, and the oxide film has good corrosion resistance, wear resistance and decoration, and can obtain a variety of colors by dyeing, which is widely used in the appearance treatment of buildings, furniture and electronic products.
3. Modern surface treatment
Physical vapor deposition (PVD) is a technology in which material atoms or molecules are physically deposited on the surface of the substrate under vacuum conditions to form a thin film. PVD film has the advantages of high hardness, low friction coefficient, high temperature resistance, etc., and is widely used in the surface strengthening and beautification of tools, molds, decorative parts, etc.
Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a method of forming a solid film layer on the surface of the substrate by gaseous chemical reaction, which can prepare high purity and high performance ceramic or metal films. CVD technology is often used to manufacture hard coatings and high-temperature and corrosion-resistant components, and has important applications in aerospace, electronics, cutting tools and other fields.
4. Mechanical surface treatment
Sandblasting and shot blasting use high-speed sand streams or projectiles to impact metal surfaces, removing oxide, burrs and impurities while increasing surface roughness to improve the adhesion of the coating. Sandblasting is suitable for complex shapes and small workpieces, while shot blasting is often used for large workpieces.
Grinding and polishing reduce the surface roughness through mechanical friction, obtain a smooth and bright surface, and improve the beauty and performance of the workpiece. Polishing is usually used for preliminary processing, polishing is used for finishing, and is widely used in decorative parts, instruments and other fields.
Why do metal parts need surface treatment?
Anti-corrosion : metal parts are prone to chemical reaction and corrosion in humid, acidic, alkaline, salt spray and other environments, leading to material performance decline and even failure. By surface treatment, a protective layer can be formed on the metal surface to slow down or stop the corrosion process. For example, electroplating, spraying, hot dip galvanizing and other methods can add a layer of anti-corrosion material to the surface of the metal, forming a barrier that prevents oxygen, moisture or chemicals from coming into direct contact with the metal .
Improve wear resistance : metal materials are often subjected to friction, wear, impact and other effects in the working process, surface treatment can improve wear resistance by hardening the surface, reduce the friction coefficient and other ways to extend the service life of parts. For example, surface hardening, laser hardening and other methods can harden the metal surface and improve the wear resistance .
Improve surface hardness : The hardness of some metal materials is not high enough to meet the needs of high-strength applications. Surface treatment can significantly improve the surface hardness without changing the properties of the material matrix. For example, carburizing and nitriding treatments can spread carbon or nitrogen atoms to the surface of the metal, forming a hard layer.
Beautify the appearance : Through surface treatment can make the appearance of metal parts more beautiful. For example, electroplating, spraying and other methods can provide various colors and protective layers for metals, enhancing their beauty and corrosion resistance .

Application of metal parts surface treatment process:
Through metal surface treatment, the corrosion resistance, wear resistance, aesthetics and functionality of the material can be improved. In terms of improving corrosion resistance, the process of electroplating, galvanizing, phosphating and coating anti-corrosion coating is used to form a protective film on the surface of the metal to prevent the erosion of corrosive media. For example, automobile parts and construction steel components are galvanized to significantly extend their service life. In order to enhance wear resistance, hard chromium plating, electroless nickel phosphorus alloy plating and surface hardening are used to improve the hardness and wear resistance of the metal surface. This is widely used in moving parts such as shafts, gears and molds in mechanical manufacturing, effectively extending the service life of the equipment.
In terms of improving the appearance, through polishing, drawing, anodizing, painting, powder and other processes, the color, texture and texture of the metal surface can be changed, and the appearance quality and added value of the product can be improved. For example, the metal shell of mobile phones and laptops is anodized to show a variety of colors and excellent hand feel. In order to improve electrical and thermal conductivity, electroplating of high conductive metals such as silver and copper can improve electrical conductivity, and can be used in electronic components, electrical connections and other fields. At the same time, the surface treatment improves the thermal conductivity of the metal, which is used in radiators, electronic cooling systems, etc. In addition, the metal surface treatment is also used to meet special functional requirements. By using micro-arc oxidation technology, ceramic film can be formed on the surface of aluminum alloy, which significantly improves the surface hardness, wear resistance and heat resistance, and is applied to high demand fields such as aerospace and military equipment.
