Products Description
This custom CNC machine steel hydraudic piston was designed by us for the customer's hydraulic bolt gun. It is made of alloy steel AISI4340 and then by quenching and tempering treatment. After surface turning and grinding, the dimensions are precise to 0.03-0.05mm. It is blacken to enhance rust resistance and improve appearance. The film layer is dark black and only 1-2 microns thick. The piston is a moving part that undergoes frequent movement and has high technical requirements. The quality of piston rod processing directly affects the lifespan and reliability of the entire product. The processing requirements for piston rods are high. Their surface roughness is required to be Ra0.4 to 0.8 μ m, and strict requirements are imposed on coaxiality and wear resistance. The working mode of the piston rod is reciprocating motion. To increase the service life of the piston rod and reduce the wear halo of the piston rod, the blank is made of AISI4340 alloy structural steel. Based on the processing accuracy requirements of each part in the part drawing, we can customize non-standard pistons for different hydraulic tools and industrial instruments for customers.
Production Process
How We Make It
Raw material inspection: AISI 4340 alloy steel bars are inspected for chemical composition and ultrasonic flaw detection to ensure that the material is defect-free at the source.
Rough machining and forming: Use CNC lathe or milling machine to perform preliminary cutting and rough machining of the shape, leaving uniform allowance for subsequent finishing.
Heat treatment: The rough-machined workpiece is subjected to tempering treatment (quenching + high-temperature tempering) to obtain the required core strength and toughness.
Precision CNC machining: During the semi-finishing and finishing stages, high-precision CNC machine tools are used to perform precision milling and turning on key parts such as the piston's outer circle, end face, sealing groove, threaded hole, etc., ensuring that dimensional and geometric tolerances reach the micron level.
Grinding and finishing: For cylindrical surfaces that require extremely high dimensional accuracy and surface finish, precision cylindrical grinders are used for final grinding.
Surface treatment: According to application requirements, the surface treatment selects the blackening process to enhance the anti-rust ability and improve the appearance. The film layer is dark black and the thickness is only 1-2 microns.
Final inspection and cleaning: Use three-coordinate measuring machines (CMM), roughness testers and other precision instruments to conduct full-size final inspection, and then carry out thorough cleaning, rust prevention and packaging.

Blackening is a chemical process. Cleaned AISI 4340 pistons are immersed in a specialized acidic blackening solution containing selenate and other ingredients. A chemical reaction between the steel surface and the solution forms a dense film primarily composed of iron selenide (FeSe) and iron oxide (Fe₃O₄). This film adheres firmly to the metal substrate, resulting in the dark black or bluish-black color you see.
